SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT :: Beatloafe

Every weekend from now onward we will be bringing you Sunday Spotlight reviews of some of the best current artists and labels in the garage music world.  Whether they're creating some serious hype in the future bass world, simply an up-and-coming artist producing some top notch tunes, or even a personal favourite, we're here to keep you in the know!

Hailing from London, UK, Beatloafe is a delightful producer who has created a sound of his own.  His musical stylings draw on the more dubby side of garage; heavy on the lush melodies while simultaneously maintaining a minimal approach.  If you're into deep garage or even uk funky, you won't be disappointed by Beatloafe's work.

Citizens' Rights by Beatloafe

Algolagnics by Beatloafe

Beatloafe has a solid release on the Whistla's renowned future garage label, L2S Recordings. It's over a year old, but that doesn't make it any less fantastic. Just being on L2S should speak for itself. My advice to you is to head on over to his Soundcloud page and take a good long listen to his work, I think his music deserves more attention.

In the mean time it has come to my attention that Beatloafe is working on some new music for the near future! We're very excited to see what he has in store for us.

Tune in next weekend for another Sunday Spotlight.

UK Garage CD Reviews

Bingo Beats Vol. 2 Mixed by ZED BIAS

The second volume of the popular Bingo Beats compilation CD Series. This time Zed Bias takes to the wheels of steel mixing together some of the biggest basslines and ruffest breakbeats. This is not your average UK Garage CD, so fans of the traditional Sing-a-long Compilation beware, this is gonna hurt!!! Some great new tracks from the likes of Zinc, Zed and Oris Jay plus the Jammin (DJ Zinc) remix of Sounds of da Future (Menta). If you liked vol. 1 you'll love vol. 2, Bingo Beats is heavier than ever and is available now!! Track to check - 'Tonka' (DJ Zincs remix of Sounds of da future) and 'Speechless' (Sounds like the Zed Bias mix of BodyGroove!!) DJ DBT

HEARTLESS CREW (HLC) presents CRISP BISCUIT

OK, its finally out. The North London men from Heartless Crew have finally brought out their double cd mixe compilation, a week before the release of their debut single (Heartless theme aka superglue riddim). The album itself is more messier than So Solid *my view only* & seriously sexier than The Streets, the reason for this is simply put down to distinctiveness. DJ Fonti is the master mind behind the decks, alongside mighty moe & bushkin. This compilation puts together Garage and DnB, with a bit of ragga style lyrics and RnB/HipHop artists voice overs. The tune selection on both CD1& CD2 is heavyweight, it is the way a compilation should be, offering all the flavas for all the ravers! Including tracks from the forthcoming, Pretty Boys release - Brass Pocket and Sexy Boy, also original clubland tracks from Menta and Roy Davis and on CD 2 we've got classics from Shy FX & DJ Hype, alongside some 3rd deck scratching. This mix cd should please everyone, if not, well your even fussier than I can imagine! ITS AN ALBUM OF THE MONTH! Lady Bubbles

DJ LUCK & MC NEAT
IT'S ALL GOOD
REL: 27-05-02

Previous Red Rose Recording duo, DJ Luck & MC Neat are currently signed to Island records and have released their album - It's all good. The album contains the well-known chart topping tracks like Ain't no stoppin us & Piano Loca. The album has MC Neat chatting his lyrics over the album. MC's CKP & Blakey make an appearance on a track entitled Ska Dis, which has got a bit of a dub/ska & ragga vibe to it, which effectively makes this track differentiate itself from the rest of the album. If your used to the sounds of MC Neat then, it might be best if you only listen to this album a few times because of his uninterrupted sequence. His lyrical content is worthy & respectable, however put that alongside a monotony of beats and you get something that is just a tad tedious. The track 'KO', features the familiar sound of the Rocky movie theme and the track 'Original guestlist', is awfully similar to that done by Oxide & Neutrino - 'You're no good for me'. The album on a whole is not really all that, I'm sure that DJ Luck & MC Neat could polish up and recover from this album. They have the ability to do so as seen in their previous compilations, however it is as yet not evident in this album. Lady Bubbles

Ms.Dynamite
A Little Deeper
REL: 10-06-02

21-year old North Londoner Naomi McLean, is one of the most talked about female artists of 2002. Previous to releasing her debut solo single 'It takes more' which reached the top 10 in the charts, Ms Dynamite was mainly known for the work she had done featuring on the Social Circles production of 'Boo'. As a mc Dynamite had been classed as the young lady to path the way for other female artists to succeed in a predominately male environment. Despite being made an offer of studying Social Anthropology at university Ms Dynamite has made the right decision and made the microphone work for her. Whether you wish to class her still as a garage mc or just as a singer or even both, it is more than evident that Ms Dynamite as got talent beyond comprehension. The album as a whole is about the grim life of the streets, and also on the other hand the album reminds us what love and self respect can do to over shadow this. For the women the album as a few pointers, ie self confidence, getting rid of those partners who are doing nothing for you. For the males it should inspire you to look a little deeper within yourselfs. For the children it should utter the essential element that is lacking in society today, respect for those who look after you, parents and other relatives. The album has been touched by the magical fingers of Salamm Remi, (the producer) and also comprises of international artists like Barrington Levi, Keon Bryce and Kymani Marley. Dynamite does not which to be looked on as a superstar, rather its more about her lyrical content, which on a whole speaks for itself. 'A little deeper' is more than a little deeper, personally I don't think that things could be anymore deeper than this album. More than worth buying. Lady Bubbles

VARIOUS ARTISTS
Back In The Day (Ayia Napa)
REL: 01-07-02

This is one of the best 4 to da floor classic compilations to be released over the last few years. It includes some of the most popular garage tracks to be released. 'Sweeet like chocolate & Sweet female Attitude's - flowers are just two of the chart topping club anthems that blew up the early nineties. The double cd compilation also features the sounds of Craig David, Sneaker Pimps, Teebone, Indo and even Oxide and Neutrino's Casualty. Its a very sophisticated garage release and very suited to those who can't / don't forget what garage was like 'back in the day'. Lady Bubbles

VARIOUS ARTISTS
Crews Control 'mc's inside the ride'
REL: 24-06-02

There has been eager anticipation 'on the streets' for the UK garage Crews to battle it out on the mic & on the decks, well this cd provides you with a clipet of what that might be like. Crews Control has brought together the garage crews of the streets & of the underground to formulate material that is going to supposidly blow up your speakers. If you are a Garage DJ, then unfortunetly this cd has no use to you whatsoever because you should know and have all the tracks in your bags. If however you are new to the garage scene, this cd might (and only might) interest you. The double cd includes: So Solid Crew, HLC (Heartless Crew), PAUG Cartel, Purple Haze Crew, More Fire Crew, Genius Cru, Lady Destiny, Groove Chronicles and even Elephant Man. This cd is good in the sense that it generates a forum for the unrecognised artists but on the other hand it is a disappointment because it is really plain and simple, and identifies the very thin line between commercial and underground garage. Lady Bubbles

MIS-TEEQ
Lickin' on both sides (New Version)
REL: 24-06-02

Mis-Teeq, have gone from strength to strength this year. They've totally cracked the UK market and hopefully will be able to establish themselves as British stars in the international market ie US. This album contains their latest release, the Double A side 'Roll On/This is how we do it'. With a fresh array of tracks Mis-teeq are set to be the most recognised all female 'garage' group around. Mis-teeq are also nominated in the Dancestar awards this year. So keep updated! Lady Bubbles

UK Garage Dark Reviews Archive

Artist: The Wideboys
Title: Breakin
Label: Garage Jams

Released on the Wideboys new label Garage Jams, Breakin is an electro breakbeat monster of a track that you will either love or hate. With electro bass sounds and vocal clips associated with "Breakin" the wideboys have provided the body poppers with some garage breaks to lock to. Beware of headspins and windmills - A class tune from garage heavyweights The Wideboys. DJ DBT

Artist: Sirus
Title: Whiplash / Red & Black
Label: Downlow

Whiplash is the 4/4 side of Sirus' first own-label release, This great bassline roller continues in the pattern of previous Sirus tracks, utilising a great bassline sound with a boucing 4/4 beat. On the flip we find a little breakbeat treat, Red & Black. Already being canned by the likes of EZ and Pay As U Go, Red & Black will appeal to a wide range of breakbeat fans. This time the distinctive Sirus bass sound is accompanied by tribal beats and an eerie vocal which is sure to cause mayhem on the dance floor! DJ DBT

Artist: Artwerk
Title: Red
Label: Big Apple

DND and Menta (Sounds of da Future) production henchman Atrwerk comes under his new alias for Big Apple records. Another simple but deadly track working along the same lines that have made Musical Mob so successful, Red is already hitting the top of Garage charts everywhere. This combination of simple beats and rubber bass seems to be leading the way in dark UK Garage at the moment! DJ DBT

Artist: Specialist Moss & Elizabeth Troy
Title: Heavyweight
Label: SDESTP
Mix: Original / Zed Bias

This double A side 12" features Zed Bias and DJ Hype remixes of the dance hall track 'Ring the Alarm' and 2 mixes of 'Heavyweight'. Heavyweight is an awesome combination of MC and vocalist with Elizabeth Troy providing a great vocal completly different to her contributions to MJ Cole tracks. The Zed Bias remix, although similar to the original adds depth and in my opinion improves this tune to no end. On the flip we find the Zed and Juiceman mix along with the DJ Hype remix of 'Ring the Alarm'. The infectious ragga vocal with drum & bass style breakbeat backing is sure to be a firm favourite with music fans. Even if you have never heard previous mixes of this track you find it strangely familiar. Big Tune!! DJ DBT

Artist: Subfunk present Tombraider
Title: Get Crunked Up
Label: White
Mix: Garage remixes

Hip Hop bad boys IKONZ get the unofficial UK remix treatment from the one and only 'Tombraider' who lets loose with a vocal and instrumental mix, both of which hit the spot. It's the vocal mix which really stands out, with Tombraiders laid back beats and garagey stabs combining nicely with the IKONZ hip hop style lyrics. Has to be played really loud to be appreciated, so go find yourself a copy of this limited 12?, and annoy your neighbours. AL20.7.01

Artist: Unknown artist
Title: Ballistix Vol 2
Label: Ballistix
Mix: Original

Breakbeat, bassline 2-step at it's very best coming in the form of Ballistix Volume 2, an uplifting, rolling hard-stepping, super funked up track which will be heard on Londons pirates for months to come. The intro builds nicely, setting the scene with some guitar licks and melodic strings, beofre slamming into the zinc style basslines which dominate for the remainder of the track. Definately one for the Dj's and Mc's in garage land...... Buy it - play it - turn it up! AL5.1.01

Artist: Mos Def / Nate Dogg
Title: On No
Label: White
Mix: DJ Hype

Yes, you haven't read wrong. DJ Hype (the original bad boy DJ) comes with a 'Zinc' style remix, which is SLAMMIN. If you like 138 Trek and other soundalikes, you'll love this, but don't think for a minute it hasen't got its own style and flavour - cos it has! Another tune which splits the UK Garage Scene in two, but expect heavy pirate radio play nevertheless! AL2.2.01

Artist: Ricky Magic Martin
Title: Snake
Label: Spellbound
Mix: Original

'Zinc' style track from Ricky Magic Martin, with the same kind of beats and little drum rolls on the ends of the drum arrangements. Movie clips make an appearance as well, (special forces, nuclear weapons, terrorists and the like !) Its a dark, dark tune, with an unusual hardcore style bassline, and it will impress those who like it dark and moody. It might grow on me! AL2.2.01

Artist: Charlie Browns Big Beat Orchestra
Title: Good Thing
Label: Telstar

Booooooomm! This one's red hot - I swear I could see steam coming from the needle the first time I played this - or was that the effects of the alcohol ?! This huge bassline led floor filler offers two mixes, one of which feature's MC Teller. The tune's intro builds nicely, using the same Hip Hop style noise as used on 'Super Sharp Shooter'. But..when the bass comes in - Game over! Good Thing? I think so !! AL

Artist: Young Star
Title: True VIP
Label: New Deal recordings

Drum & Bass orientated two step, guaranteed to blow up your speakers wherever you drop it. The intro's top class, as is the chunky wobbly bass, old skool stabs and vocals which make up the main arrangement of the track. Can't help but think Drum & Bass everytime I hear it, but I guess thats the way the two step sound is heading. Another fine track for the Bass lovers among us. AL

Artist: Wassup !!
Title: Wassup !!
Label: White
Mix: Original

It was bloody obvious somone was going to do it, and i must admit that it had crossed my mind ....but after hearing this I'm glad I did'nt. It says 'wassup' a lot, and then the vocal goes on to say that "he likes chillin with his girlfriend". How nice . Buy it...and then turn it into an ash-tray......and stop saying 'wassup'...you sound stupid ! AL

Artist: So Solid Crew
Title: Oh No (Sentimental Things)
Label: Relentless
Mix: Original

Listen

honk, honk, honk-honk-honk! You know this is a tune of course, although even I'm shocked by its popularity (remember, this was rolling around for ages on the pirates!) I'm into the mc'ing on this one, which is unusual for me, but all in all it's a stomper... Oh, and with catchy female vocals from Lisa Maffia, and large scary dogs in the video, you can't really ask for more ! AL

Artist: This is Stan
Title: Eminem
Label: White
Mix: 'This is Stan' Mix

This much hyped Eminem track, which of course looks bound for x-mas number one, gets the garage treatment by the 'illejitimate children' (whoever they are..and yes, it is spelt like that!). Well, to be honest, I'm not sure about this one. It will be a crowd pleaser for sure, mainly down to the hype surrounding this tune, and the phat warped bassline which is huge! But the vocals are fast, and sometimes incomplete, and the arrangement won't win any prizes, so don't expect to hear this version over your turkey and crackers! AL

Artist: Phat Bass inc
Title: Zombie Antics
Label: White
Mix: Original

More nu-skool breaks for the hardcore nutters among us. Hard two step beats slapped together with snippets of "zombie nation", that unusual house track that everyone went mad about in the summer. Its ruff aroung the edges, but then thats never put me off a tune, so don't let it put you off. It sounds like it was made in someone's bedroom, and probably was, but if you like tunes underground, give it a go. AL

Artist: Santos
Title: Camels
Label: White
Mix: DJ Zinc

Yee - haahh! I know I love the garage lick, but holy shit, you can't afford to ignore this bad boy. This ones better than "Hold On" and just as good as "138 Trek", so if you know and love those tunes you know what to expect with this one. Low down dirty beats and basslines, super fast hi-hats and dark, nasty strings smash it up to give you what can only be described as nu-skool - a brand new musical genre if you ask me! This is the new sound London was waiting for, so look out for more of this stuff blasting out of London's Pirates and beyond. UK garage was always gonna go underground again... and it's done it in the form of nu-skool... you heard it here first! AL

Artist: Tasty Jay & Nicky Ni Feat MC Jensky
Title: Rise Out
Label: Strange youth
Mix: Original

Watch out, watch out...PIG in the box, PIG in the box !!! Now as you all know, I'm not the greatest lover of MC'ing tunes..and if you hear this you'll understand why ! Poor quality production, meaningless vocals (you know the kinda stuff...diggy diggy widda widda bassline bassline blah blah) and, if that wasn't enough, they've nicked the 'Dark Stranger' hook (shout to all the old skool jungle crew !). MC Jensky says his name starts with a capital J...well this is crap with a capital C. AL

Artist: Bass city rollaz
Title: Bass city rollaz 002
Label: White
Mix: Original

Ouch ! This super little one sided slab of vinyl certainly hits the spot, unleashing a lethal cocktail of banging 2 step beats, ragga chants and piano breakdowns on the unsuspecting raver. It's harder and faster than Mike tyson in a ferrari, with a gnarly bassline following the unusual piano style intro (IT'S HEAVY !). It's also great to mix, and sounds mental on a loud system ! Buy it now ! AL

So Long
Fierce vs BumpandFlex
White

Listen

Oh the bline is gonna get you isn't it. The dub mix was rinsed on pirate radio though personally to feel this tune you should hear in a club because it really shines there. On the radio or a normal hi-fi set up it doesn't really sound that criss. The long Bump and Flex intros that have those certain hooks. In this intro you have a robotic sample which builds up to the breakdown. With those words to warn you about the bassline and then a build up kick drum rolls in and the bassline comes out. A typical Bump & Flex sounding bassline, but sounds very rough with those crisp swinging beats with those hi hats and rolling snares. An absolute roller of a dub. The vocal mix on the other hand is really well produced with bouncy but classy chords mix well with Fierce's sweet vocals. The swingy 2step beat slide perfectly underneath the vocals and then the chords mix with the nice bassline which isn't to harsh for this vocal remix. Two different remixes to suit your mood. IM

It's The Way
F.U.N.
Krunch Records

Listen

"It's the Wayyyy". This tune as I've discovered is a love hate tune, being many people either love it or hate. I personally love it, when you get an MC rinsing over instrumental parts the tune really does fill in. It is repetitive with the vocal sample but the culminated with that rough bassline, that isn't to harsh and that borrowed beat from Dem2 Destiny though differently arranged it sounds PHAT. The breakdown with the man announcing "Come Down Operator With the 99 Remix, Remix" really does warn you that something big is going to happen and then hits you with the vocal/beats/bassline stormer. F.U.N. tried to bring back the tune with Y2K remixes but they sounded awful and didn't really understand where they where coming from. I think this tune is a raving tune, slap a rough MC on top of it and it should rock the show. IM

Terminator
DJ Oxide
White

Listen

Urghhh. What a terrible tune. Oxide mate, get your act together and stop making so much dry tunes. Sampling Casualty was a joke but really wore out quickly. Yes you've made your money from that, but bringing out Superman and then Terminator, jeez. I know loads of people like this sound but this isn't real garage it's just a laugh, something that you don't seriously, though it seems some people have taken that sound seriously. HUH!!, anyway if Oxide only stopped sampling films/programmes he could come up with a average bassline tune but no he sticks in this stupid Terminator sample and ruins an average tune. The drums are decently programmed and bassline is alright but sticking stupid samples are just annoying. Personally I think Oxide has talent though once he's grown out of this phase he could actually make some good garage. If he got a vocalist and thought of a proper tune, I think it could sound good. Though at the moment I think he's a dry producer BUT he has got potential. IM

Relax
Deetah vs Bump and Flex
Ffrr

Listen

Wow. Now this was and still is a tune. One of Grants best remixes in the Bump and Flex guise, this tune was quite a pioneering. It had these elements that we have heard before from 2step tunes and the early 4/4 tunes but they all came together on this tune. It was quite a dubby remix with Deetah's vocals used sparingly. The intro is wicked as usual with its gradual build up which really works the crowd and gives the DJ a chance to ride the mix. This then peaks into the final kick of the build up and then SMACK the bassline kicks in with such a bassline. The chords then are introduced into the tune and mix really well with the bassline. The dubby use of the vocals is really clever and the tune sounds really filled when the vocals playing. The whole tune is well produced and arranged and shows of Grants skills as such a talented and skilled producer. IM

Smooth Operator
Ross Young featuring MC RB
White

Listen

This tune always gives me jokes. The lyrics are so bloody funny which really gets the steppers going. The beat is a simple 2stpe beat with a stong house hi hat and the bassline is a sub standard garage bassline which is quite boring. RB fame from Sunship's Try Me Out lyrics are feel good and I still don't feel the tune. Peronally it does get the ravers going but really I think it's another MC-ing tune, though an MC tune which makes me laugh with those lyrics. Either you love this tune or hate it. IM

Little Bit Of Luck
DJ Luck & MC Neat
Red Rose

Listen

This tune has been given the commercial treatment though it originally featured on Red Rose Records EP by DJ Luck and MC Neat and this tune was initially an intro tune for Luck's sets. Hence the overuse of the word Luck. It hollowing intro with Neat's lyric's instantly recognisable with his rough lyrics and individual style such as "With A Little Bit Of Luck you can get me true the night". It borrows the Hyperfunk beat which slides over the harsh bassline and Neat's enjoyable lyrics. Personally people did overate this tune, though it is still a tune but it wasn't THAT GOOD. IM

The Fone Tune
Two 1 Two
White

Listen

This tune really take the novelty thing to another level doesn't it? I mean using a mobile phone sample over some garage beats???? I mean really it that necessary. The actual instrumental of the tune is alright just another bassline tune but adding annoying samples really does take the biscuit. The production of these tunes has harmed the garage scene with the producers producing these tune to sufice the market. Tunes like this are only made solely for the money, the early ones where fine, they where a laugh a bit of a crowd reaction some variation. Though people have seen this and thought tell would sample something so stupid that it will sell and can line my pocket so I can buy my car. It's like the rave days, when people made novelty tunes to make a few grand to buy a suit or something, not seeing and caring what effect these tunes would have on the market. Though this was bound to happen with a new scene somthing always comes along to break the scene but the scene is stronger than ever, and Y2K is garage the second coming. IM

Bring Me Down
Zac Toms
Unda Vybe

Listen

One half of the Stanton Warriors Zac Toms has been rightfully been given the rinsed treatment by the all the major garage DJ's. It has an obvious house influence from the sweet chords but has a mixture of the 4/4 garage flava with a dark old skool style garage bassline. The bassline and the breakdown is influnced from Montono Vs Trumpet Man-It'za trumpet Thing. It is a really chrisp tune and remains and progresses with smooth 4/4 style chords which gives this stomer added funk. Though when all the vocals/chords/bassline/beats all culminate into one that is where the tune really shines. Absolute club smash. IM

Over Here
M Dubs
Baby Shack 001

Listen

This was the first M Dubs tune I heard even though they had produced tunes previous to this was the one that really got me. From the men Dennis M-Dubs and Ras Kwame and vocals from Richie Dan they produced an absolute gem. The intro is of a sparse breakbeat with very noticeable reverb snares. When Richie Gives the indication "Now Here This" his lyrics roll with this mad old skool bassline. That is when the tune rocks the whole place, and believe me this tune does the rock the show. The female sample of "Iron Mike" which stuck in many of the ravers mind and they kept on saying to the DJ, 'You Have Iron Mike?" This was a club anthem and it was a new style to the ever expending garage scene which showed how diverse this scene was going to be. It paved the way for M-Dubs and Richie Dan and gave them the recognition they deserved. IM

Life Is What You Make It
Zed Bias featuring Jhay Palmer
Sidewinder

Oooh. What a tune! The smooth female vocals over this bass driven tune shows a rough hybrid of the two sounds. The vocal and bassline scene, Zed Bias is a master at this technique. The production has this irony to it by the lyrics 'Sunny Days Are Here' and you have some evil, dark bassline underneath it. Intentional or not this tune is one of my favourite Zed Bias tunes. IM

Freak Beat
Lady Saw vs B15 Project
Oracabessa

Lady Saw will be known to most of you as the vocalist on the massive M-Dubs Smash 'Bump & Grind'. She returns here with the impressive 'Freak Beat' with Lady Saws unique style being instantly recognizable. Originally a ragga tune, it has been remixed by the Birmingham based B15 project. Chopped up beats and scratch organ effect build the track and leave you anticipating the deep organ base that kicks in. Overall, a bit of a dancehall stormer. IM

Western End - The Birmingham Crew
Mr Vegas vs B15 Project
Oracabessa

Mr Vegas will be known to all of you, I'm sure, as the voice behind the Chart storming ragga anthem "Heads High". His latest offering has been remixed by the B15 project to create a hard-hitting piece of 2-Step. A low pad section sets the mood but the real class comes in the half speed breakdown which kicks into the Bad bass line. Included on the flip side is B15's earlier remix (released over a year ago) which was one of the earliest tracks to combine Ragga Vocals with a Garage four-to-the-floor beat. Also included is the origional reggae version. IM

Sweet Sensation
PK
White

A sub-standard bassline remix featuring the vocals from Loleatta Holloway's-Love Sensation by. It's to bassline heavy, with a boring bassline that doesn't really give this tune any feeling. The vocals are put on over this backing tune and turns Holloway's beautiful DIVA vocals into just another bassline garage tune. It would get played but it's just another bassline tune which doesn't stand out. IM

What You Want
Pharmacist
White

At first this 2step remix of the classic, What You Want by Industry Standard is at first a very dark piece of 2step almost tech-step. Then vocals kick in and this semi-happy xylophone bassline and is loses the audience with its repetitiveness. It really is a poor remix of the classic and doesn't do any good to the original. If you know the original then I recommend you stay away from this one. IM

Unknown
Richie Dan
White

Hmm. A weird piece of piano/Ragga 2step from the man Richie Dan who has scored on many successful garage hits. It has an acid jazz bassline underneath this smooth jazz influenced piece of 2step. It's really a song-orientated piece with Richie constantly rolling the lyrics. It's the beginning of a new style of jazzy 2step, some may find to get their heads around so don't judge it on the first hearing and give it a chance. IM

11:59
MC Belove and Valerie M
White

Another Mcing tune is the flava of da raver isn't it? An alright attempt by MC , the lyrics are nice have a hip-hop feeling to it. The vocal section is quite sub-standard and the production is too receptive and doesn't have the flare of the other MC tunes. The actual tune is just a rolling bassline, though doesn't develop and does get a bit annoying towards the end. An all right attempt though nothing too special though isn't it a bit late for that 11:59 moment? IM

Stand and Deliver
Wideboys
White

Listen

Bassslineeeeeeee. I love this tune so much. I have to congratulate the Wideboys well done for another hit. The xylophone bassline is rolling. There is also a wonderful 4/4 mix which I absolutely adore for the beats suit this harsh bassline. It's not in that typical d&b/garage style but a bad rough rolling garage bassline. The production and vocals are rough with the vocals skimming the tune. The change slight change in bassline over that breakdown should guarantee a rewind from any self respecting DJ. A tune that's in my box that won't be leaving for a while. Wideboys bringing us 2step and 4/4, what can I say, nuff respect boys. IM

Taking Over Me
New design
Public Demand

This Tune has been around for ages since and has only recently been getting the much-needed attention it deserves. It starts of with a nice keyboard intro, quite cheesy and poppy if you think about it in the way its portrayed. The vocals are skimmed over the beats in the intro and the Ragga man announcer is saying his business. Then this standard breakdown occurs and out of the blue comes this rolling jazzy bassline. It has that feeling to it which puts a smile on my face. Though there isn't enough vocal the tune then there could be which is the major downfall in this tune. Though still is a decent piece of 2step compared to the dry tunes out there. IM

Don't Waste My Time
Wideboys
White

What a tuneeee. The Wideboys are good underground producers who are actually underground and not that prolific. They have produced some stomping tunes and this tune has just proved there ability. Now this Tune is the ultimate bridge for 2step and 4/4 and is done so seamlessly you don't actually notice it. What a change for some ordinary 2step with a choppy vocal to this wonderful piece of 4/4. Chords are in the right place and bassline rolling with the descending down to form the classic sort of descending 4/4 bassline. A fresh piece of garage which is getting the props it deserves. Nuff respect to you boys, getting the attention from clubland (big in the garage world at the moment). IM

Do For Love (2step mix)
2 Pac
White

This is a mellow piece of garage which remakes the bad boy rappers tune. It is inevitable though that one of 2 Pac's tunes was to remixed into and brought to the attention of the garage ravers. Not too much variation though on the original except of the beats and the added rough sub bass. An absolute bwad boy tune that should raise a smile and a hand, especially from any garage head who likes their 2 Pac. IM

Your Love
Unknown
White

A piece of vocal/bassline garage. An interesting dark bassline with the stabbing vocal sample of 'Your Love' which slides over the well programmed predominate beats in this cut. Everything seems to slot into place and the bassline, which is heavily, chopped which should give the bass headz something to dance to. The vocal sample is continuously put in and out which has a 'It's the Way' or 'Deep Inside' sort of feel to it. For those who like their 2step nice and dark. IM

Why You Follow Me
Erick Benay
White

Interesting production on this tune. The predominate high hats gives this tune character on what I would call 'Electro 2step'. It has that Electro feel to it due to the bassline but with a feeling of funk as the tune progress's. With the tunes choppy vocals and dark solid's on the tune gives it a nice feeling to it. IM

Jump & Shout
Basement Jaxx vs Dem2
White

When I first heard the original mix of this tune I though it was absolutely rowdy. Though quite a few people didn't seem to feel that way, i.e. chart sales where lower compared to 'Red Alert' and 'Rendez-Vu'. Though the Ragga vocals on this track would totally suit a garage mix at present, thanks to tunes like 'Troublesome' and 'Bump & Grind'. This Dem 2 mix has the usual Dem 2 qualities, such as the rolling chopped up drums, and the grungy style effects and the pounding kicks and blines. This mix uses the minimum amount of the vocals but uses them to effect. There is a deep/dark feel to the tune and is the type of tune to get the crowd hyper. A good remix from the Dem 2 stable, keep it up lads. IM

Fly By
T-bone feat. MC Sparks and Kie
White

Listen

This tune is a nice piece of MC-ing action by these two MC's giving us some rough lyrics. It's a good piece of 2step with a nice tune underneath it. A lot is happening in this tune and the lyrics are quite amusing, i.e. 'K-Kinder Surprise, I-Into Your Eyes, E-Just realise'. Also the inclusion of sound effects, wisps all add to this tune. A feel good tune which should keep the ravers happy, a tune which keeps me happy anyway. IM

It's the Way 2000
F.U.N
Krunch

It's the way was a bwad bwoy tune, a tune which when the MC's ride the Mic over this one it sounds amazing. The new remixes are strange. One of them being a bassline influenced piece of garage. The bassline is rather dark and bass heavy that of course is a reflection on the bass heavy audience at the present time of garage. The other remix is a sort of reggae style piece of garage in the way of the chord structure. It is no way as good as the original that really keeps the crowd happy. IM

Bigging Up The Massive
Orris Jay feat MC Rankin
White

A bassline flex with MC Rankin and Orris Jay on production. It's a piece of feel good tune which has a throbbing bassline to it. A tune which should get the ravers going with Rankin' bellowing 'Big Up the Massive. The production is rather bland and it does get boring after a while. The type of tune to be played for a short while in a set, just to get a cheer from the ravers. IM

For Real
M Dubs
White

Listen

Dennis M Dubs does it again. After the Sweet Love remix, which was rather a let down he has come back with a stormer of a tune. Ras Kwame does the vocals in true Ragga stylee. The production is first class with rolling percussive beats as usual. It's in the vein of bump and grind but has a dirty bassline, which seems to suit the mood of todays garage raver. It's got a chanting background while Ras rinses the mic with his vocals. A good tune, absolutely tearing the place, nice. B-side in much the same vein with a slightly varied b-line. IM

Bulletproof (Rmxs)
Breakbeat Era
Talkin Loud

Listen

Breakbeat Era, a good combination of Roni Size/DJ Die/Leoni Laws is remixed by MJ Cole and Steve Gurley. MJ Cole brings us a nice piece of garage, nice sweeping effects, good bass effects and his true productive styles show. It's amazing how he can recreate Laws vocals from the d&b circuit to the garage circuit. The dub is MJ Cole making a more slower with a straight forward militant jazzy beats, not bad. Steve Gurleys mix is average, in typical Steve Gurley fashion with his standard booming kicks and solid effects and that sparse production technique. He's a good producer but needs to develop his style a bit more, move it forward. Recommend MJ's vocal mix, rough. Original included for you d&b headz (myself included). IM

BassLick
Second Protocol
White

Listen

A tune regularly played by EZ, possibly called BASSLICK a bit of a tune. Basically if you have heard EZ play out recently then you must have heard this tune. It's the tune with piano melody reminds me of The Lighter (old jungle tune) and then kicks into a mad rhythm. Its badly produced and everything but has that raw feeling to it, a feeling which is not usually easy to come by. This is a rather hard tune to get but if you get a copy watch the place blowww. IM

UK Garage Vocal Reviews Archive

Artist: 'Instant Karma' Presents I Monster
Title: Daydream in Blue
Label: Bashment vs KL
Mix: Garage remixes

UK garage at it's most unique and very very best, in the shape of the Bashment vs KL remix of I Monster. 'Daydream in Blue' kicks from start to finish, with fat basslines, chunky 2 step and robotic vocals taking you on a journey through everything which is great about the UK scene at the moment. You may be wondering who Bashment vs KL are? Well when i tell you that they are an alias for top garage remixers SUNSHIP, it doen't come as such a suprise that the tune is as good as I say it is. So look out for this little baby being played all around town this summer...you won't be disapointed. AL20.7.01

Artist: Frances James & DJ Face
Title: Girls play too
Label: AM:PM/Solo
Mix: Original

Long serving DJ Francis James and the man DJ Face combine to bring you 'Girls play too', a slamming UK garage 12? with FOUR excellent remixes. 2 bassline heavy mixes from Baffled are my faves, but if that doesn't sort you out, the Original Mix and the offering from Club Asylum certainly will. 'Girls play too' has already been rated as a '30 yarder' on the Dreem Teems Radio One radio show, and looks set to be another one of those big tunes this summer. The title itself will be a hit with the garage girls, especially with tunes like 'Buttas' doing the rounds at the moment! But, jokes aside, this tune will be big...keep it up Francis and DJ Face!! AL20.7.01

Artist: Bran Van 3000 Feat Curtis Mayfield
Title: Astounded
Label: Virgin / grand royal
Mix: MJ Cole remixes

When the postman knocks at 7am to give you records on a Saturday morning, it can sometimes be a bit annoying (especially with a hangover). But when they hand you tracks like this, you could kiss them!! (errr..well, maybe not, but never mind!) Astounded has been re-mixed by the one and only MJ Cole, and this sweet, soulful, energetic 2 stepper confirms once again that if you're looking for class, MJ's your man. The tracks feature vocals from the late, great Curtis Mayfield, after James Di Salvio, one of the brains behind Bran Van was allowed access to his achives. Curtis' vocals blend beautifully with MJ Coles twangy guitars and disco strings, setting the summer tune trend for others to follow. Now all we need is a bit of sun.......... AL1.5.01

Artist: K Warren Feat Lee-O
Title: Coming Home
Label: Go Beat
Mix: Original

Another anthem courtesy of remixer extrordinaire K-Warren, this time accompanied by the vocal talents of Lee-O. This ones been knocking about on London's airwaves for quite a while, but finally gets a full release through Go-Beat, and includes remixes by Hackney Soldiers and Reach & Spin. The original of course doesn't really need any write up, apart from to say that it's a pure ladies track, and that you must have a copy 'cos it's a garage classic. The other two remixes however, cater for the bass lovers among us, with the reach & spin effort just about edging it with a gnarly bass led stomper. But neither come close to the original - that's just pure garage! AL5.1.01

 Artist: Dahsheka Feat Mc Gremlin
Title: 'Buttas'
Label: WEA
Mix: Original

A garage anthem for all the independent ladies, Dahsheka tells it like it is to poor old Mc Gremlin, who, even when told he's ugly, doesn't get the message. He is, as the title suggests, 'buttas'. Definately NOT 'buttas' is the garagey remix courtesy of "sunship", which skips along nicely, making good use of the original vocals throughout. Theres also the obligatory bassline heavy mix from sunship vs chunky, as well as the brilliant orginal which always leaves a smile on the face. Fellas had better get ready for the backlash...Dahsheka means business! AL5.1.01

 Artist: Teish O'Day
Title: He's the one
Label: White label
Mix: DreemHouse Remixes

South London starlet Teish O'Day gets the remix treatment from the Dreemhouse stable in what can only be descibed as true soulful garage style. With warped and heavy basslines becoming the norm, its fantastic to finally put on a tune which has a distinct lack of both. "He's the one" rolls on through with sexy vocals, garagey stabs and tight skippy beats, satisfying the real garage lovers who stay dedicated to the original sound. Totally cool and deadly from Teish and Dreemhouse AL5.1.01

Artist: Alex Lee & Nicky Noo Remix
Title: Garage Fever
Label: BRONXX RECORDS
Mix: Original

Brand new track from the Bronxx stable, manipulating the Peggy Lee classic, 'Fever' into a fast moving, slammin' 2-step garage corker ! Phat beats and new, original basslines bounce off of the wicked vocals of Chelle Dee and Bloo Girl, all of which come together to form an unstoppable 1 sided 12" limited edition track which some of the top DJ's are already picking up on and playing to the masses. One for the year 2001 we hope !! AL7.3.01

 Artist: Blackout
Title: Mr DJ
Label: Spellbound
Mix: Original + Architechs Remix

'Hey mista DJ play someting hot, something I can dance to in me jeep or inna me block!!' I have no idea what she's on about, but oh my God...watta tune ! From start to finish, this tune is the lick, with catchy vocal layouts, hip hop style raps in places and the unique Architechs production we've all grown to love. It's gonna be HUGE....Trust the Alex Lee on this one ! AL7.3.01

 Artist: Gorrillaz
Title: Clint eastwood
Label: Parlophone
Mix: Ed Case

'I'm happy, feeling sad I've got sunshine......' Don't ask me why I keep opening my reviews with the bloody words of the tunes, but, well, lets be honest, we should blame the producers for making such catchy, cool, Kicking tracks !! Another massive tune which is already gathering pace, fusing ragga vocals and samples with Damon Albarn of BLUR. TUNE TUNE TUNE !! Oh, and I forgot to mention......TUNE ! AL7.3.01

 Artist: Kartik
Title: The way we freak
Label: Red Rose
Mix: code blue

Listen

A release on the Red Rose Label normally guarantees a good tune, and this beauty will definately make you shake your booty! I love a quality vocal, and this track oozes style, with funked up 2 step beats and 'fairground ride' stabs keeping the vocal rolling throughout. Smooth and sexy from Kartik and Code Blue. AL2.2.01

Artist: Optical Haze
Title: Sombody else's guy
Label: Interllect Promo
Mix: Original

Coming straight out of Mimosa studios, the Optical Haze boys come with a corker which will have DJ's falling over themselves to pick up a copy. Ladies will love the vocal, fella's will love the bassline, but all in all, even ya litle sister will be shaking her thing to this once she hears it ! It has commercial appeal in the same sense as 'Scott and Leon' remixes, but it stays in the underground with a host of garagey stabs and chunky basslines. LARGE !. AL2.2.01

 Artist: Marco Zappala
Title: INSOUL
Label: BMG
Mix: Original

Marco is one of Brazil's biggest remixers, doing the business for class acts such as Destinys Child & Jocelyn Enriquez. It appears that the 2-step flavour has finally hit South America, as Marco comes with 3 excellent 2-step remixes of "I just wanna love you", "Loving you" and " Positive day." All three are mellow, well produced tracks, making good use of the vocals throughout...and not a warped bassline in sight !! All in all, it hits the mark like a Pele free kick ! AL2.2.01

 Artist: Ramsey & Fen
Title: Favourite part of me
Label: Bug
Mix: Original

The orginal UK Garage masters return with a track which can only be described as a MONSTER TUNE ! The beauty of this tune is that its 100% garage. The Vocals are superb, (including some which rinse it reggae style), as is the rest of the production. This track won't eclipse lovebug, but who gives a f**k - Ramsey & Fen are back on form. AL2.2.01

 Artist: Dane
Title: Shut Up (and forget about it)
Label: White
Mix: G4orce

G4orce, the crew who remixed Ushers "pop ya Collar" come with a simliar style vocal led remix which really works the dance floor. The thing I like about G4orce is that they let the vocal do the work, allowing the bassline to blend in nicely with the beats and chords. Very nice indeed, so shut up, and don't forget to buy it! AL2.2.01

Artist: Danjamouse
Title: Trust in Me
Label: White
Mix: Original

I love to hear new styles, and this is fresh and un-believably funky from Danja Mouse. 'Trust in me' is rolling 2-step on a pure underground tip. A great reggae-ish bunch of stabs are blended in with low-down dirty drum arrangements, tasty vocals and a so sweet bassline...you have to hear it loud to appreciate it ! Boys and girls alike will love it, but it might be a little bit too underground to make it really big. But, if you can get hold of this one-sided wonder, do so !! AL

Artist: Zoom and DBX
Title: Come again
Label: Planet Phat
Mix: Original

Mellow, sexy garage at it's best from the Planet Phat crew. Instantly recognisable from the twinkly stabs and ragga samples, this ladies favourite will without doubt be rinsed for years to come. I'll say no more..If you can get it (it was sold out quite a few times I tried to get it) buy it, put it in the box, and play it loud ! AL

Artist: Usher
Title: Pop ya Colla
Label: White
Mix: G4orce remixes

I wasn't sure if I was going to find any "garage" to review this month, but trust Usher to put a spanner in the works! One thing to say about this little roller - ladeeezzz tunnnneeee !!! This gorgeous slice of garage goes straight into the box, and probably won't come out for some time. Usher in my opinion is one of the only R&B artist who crossess over well into garage (who can forget "you make me wanna!). Bumpy beats and smooth vocals make this tune 100% irresistable..why buy your mum a prezzie when you can buy this !! AL

Artist: Babyface
Title: Keep on
Label: 500 rekords
Mix: Original

500 rekords, the leaders of the underground, release an absouloute corker. It's got new skool feel, with a chunky, funky bassline keeping you moving throughout. The vocals OKish, but the beats are heavy and the production ruff enuff to keep the underground lovers content. Oh, and check out the sample which comes in just before it all drops, which says 'GET THE F**K UP' ..........we suggest you do what it says ! AL

Artist: Slik Kutz Feat TK and MC Image
Title: Do you Feel Me
Label: FTL Recordings
Mix: Original

Aiya Napa feel good tune from FTL Recordings. Piano's (yes, piano's !), Vo-Codered Vocals (Cher Style) and wobbly basslines gel together nicely, with the odd snippet of MC'ing thrown in for good measure (or not if you'd rather, 'cos theres a version without it). Nice beats, nice production too... All in all, it does the job...but it's not a classic. AL

Artist: Johnny Corporate
Title: Sunday Shoutin'
Label: Defected
Mix: Original

Listen

I hope you all don't mind me including this one...not garage exactly, but a tune nevertheless in my opinion ! I'm a sucker for a bit of four-to-the floor, and I've loved this for ages. The rolling bassline, and up-beat saxaphone turns this into a garage crossover if ever there was one, and when I've dropped this on the pirates, the phonelines have gone mad ! It makes a change from the darkside stuff thats floating around at present, and reminds me of how garage used to be...which I guess shows my age......25......arrrggghhhhh !!!!! AL

Artist: Ed Case
Title: Something in your eyes
Label: Red Rose
Mix: K Warren

Listen

Took it's time crossing over to the mainstream, but now looks set to be bloody huge. K Warrens mix is truly fantastic - I still remember the first time I heard this, and it sends shivers everytime I play this out. It's a ladies favourite, so DJ's can't really afford not to have this in the bag whether you're in a club or rinsing it out on the pirates. Great vocals, great production - great tune. Didn't like ed cases original though!!! AL

Artist: Alex Lee & Nicky Noo
Title: The Look
Label: Bronxx Records

Yep, this one's me and Nicks new one, out on Bronxx records as we speak. The Reggae style intro leads nicely into chunky beats and bass, all chopped together with some garage and old skool stabs. We've had a great response so far, but as I'm biased, you'll have to make your own mind up ! Look out for some new releases from us in the New Year..we'll make sure you hear them first on www.garagemusic.co.uk ! AL

Artist: Modjo
Title: Lady (Remix)
Label: White Label
Mix: 2 Step Mix

It is of course inevitable that every summer's Ibiza anthem gets sampled, and turned into a UK Garage track. This years no different, of course, but this little cracker is certainly one not to be ignored. The strange thing is that it dosen't really need the cheesy sample - it's a good enough track without it in my opinion, and i'd have preffered an original vocal in place of Modjo. But, lets not dwell on the vocal - the tunes sharp beats and subby/scwelchy bass do the job nicely, and you can't help but shake ya rump once it comes in. Most definately one for the bass heads! AL

Artist: Architects
Title: Body Groove
Label: White Label
Mix: Original/Zed Bias

Listen

Quite shocking how this little underground anthem has grown! This tune can only be described as one thing........ catchy. Yep, hear it once on a Saturday night, and you'll still be singing it at work Monday morning gauranteed ! Poppy vocals mixed with highly irrelevant MC chat form the basis of the tune of course, and, as Garage is flavour of the year, it has was bound to have huge crossover appeal. But it is fun, and the lack of warped bassline means it's a winner in my eyes. It's also got two mixes, so you can choose to listen to Nana singing the chorus rather than the MC if you'd rather! It shouldn't have worked - but it did! AL

Artist: All Saints
Title: Black Coffee
Label: Public Demand
Mix: Wideboys

Must admit to being a big fan of the Wide Boys stuff. I love their arranagement and use of vocals, and both of these mixes conform to what we usually expect from them. The Expresso mix is my favourite though, with hard choppy beats working the basslines and vocals nicely, plus the odd sprinkling of garagey stabs. It sounds just so 'garagey' - which, lets face it, is refreshing in these times of hard and huge basslines - so, if you truly like the "Garage" sound, give this one some room in the box!. AL

Artist: Glamma Kid
Title: Bills 2 Pay
Label: WEA
Mix: Zed Bias

If PHAT basslines is your particular cup of tea, then I'm pretty sure this little number should be up your street. The Bias serves up his usual array of original two step beats & huge basslines, making clever use of the vocals from start to finish. The intro's pretty much standard, but it's the first drop where it gets interesting, with an absolutely HUGE bassline soaring through the speakers for just a few seconds, before it all comes crashing in fast and furious, with what ends up being the main part of the tune. It'll make you dance, and it'll get re-loaded plenty, so it's well worth a look. AL

Artist: Monsta Boy feat. Denzie
Title: Sorry (Didn't know)
Label: White

Listen

Yep, the tune of the moment in a "ya mums walking around singing it" type of thing, but you can't really blame 'em. This pirate anthem really is the ladies favourite, as any DJ or MC knows (and has known for some time now !) and this tune would propably be the first tune in the box for most DJ's who want to please the crowd. Denzie holds the vocals down nicely, over a fairly light beat, and some nice high hats....but its when the bassline drops in that it does it for most. I caught this live in August, and it really did work well.....I keep expecting to see them on Top of the Pops next, but who cares.....WE HAD IT FIRST ! ...and thats all that matters. AL

Hold On
Colours featuring Eska and Stephen Emmanuelle
Inferno

Listen

What a tune. When I first heard this I couldn't believe my ears for it was so fresh and unheard of. That weird harsh twinklely instrument was new and exciting. The instrument then mixed in with the minimal lyrics from the male vocalist. The 2step beat then gradually built up with the instruments and the vocals but then a roll kicked and the entire tune kicked off. The lyrics changed and the bassline got stronger to emphasise this change and then the energy in the tune built up. That twinklely instrument is the key to the whole tune and it never gets boring, it's very interesting and keeps the whole tune together. This producer should get checked more for he is underrated and though he isn't constantly producing a lot of tunes he should be given more recognition. IM

Sincere
MJ Cole
White

Listen

Tunneee. We should know this classic MJ Cole tune by now and if not you better get to know this tune. An early 2step classic from the man which shows that this producer does what he wants and doesn't conform to anyone, and makes what he wants. This is a wonderful piece of mellow 2step with those MJ Cole snares and arrangement really shows of his skills. The dreamy vocals suit perfectly well with the alternating 2step to 4/4 beat which indicate mood changes in the tune, a clever technique which Cole has mastered and can do it so seamlessly. Weird sound effects are sprinkled over the whole piece and that reversed vocal when the word "Sincere" is sung. The subtle use of extra instruments e.g. Piano, Trumpet etc really gives this tune class and it really inspires people to do what you what and use any things in a tune. Have a go, do your own thing, it may not be intentional but for me he is personally an inspiration to me and my production workIM

Poison
The Corrupted Crew
Kronik

Listen

What a tune!!! This tune has been out for ages and didn't get rinsed until those test pressings where released for all those DJ's to rinse out, and rightly so. This is a cover of Bel Biv Devoe's original smooth r&b tune but it hasn't really been altered from the original. Though it still sounds rough. With that breakdown and that roll with that weird SFX sample which leads into a storming piece of vocal 2step. The constantly moving bassline has a feeling of Brandy Monica in it. The beats are very tight and are constantly rolling, which means the tune never has a dull part to it. The vocals are very smooth and well sung with some nice lyrics. The breakdown to the MC Neat section varies the tune with some fine lyrics from the man. This all leads to a storming keyboard section, with a lot of jazzy rifts giving it some class. The remixes aren't really all that and don't match this mix.IM

Been Here Before
Zed Bias
DFL

Listen

Ohhhhh, tuneeee. Zed Bias the man who knows how to make a bassline has come up with this stomer of a tune. It is a different tune from his usual associations with the garage scene and is very different from the usual selection of garage. The beats follow the melody of this tune which sounds really interesting. The vocals has this echo sound to it which liven ups this piece. The instrumental section with gradually building strings is the favourite part of the tune for me. I find it really emotive and has this really good feeling towards it. Then the main section kicks in again and the tune really rolls. One of my favourite Zed Bias productions. IM

Dreams
Smokin Beats
AM:PM

Listen

Yes, I remember this one from yesteryear. I good piece of 4/4 garage from Smokin Beats, who have now moved on to more US influenced garage tunes, (check them out if your a US Garage fan). This was a spacey piece of garage with those dreamy vocals which the suits the rightfully given title. The funky bassline has a dark element to it and the entire piece is really spacey. The arrangement is typical of the 4/4 garage sound though due to mellowness of the tune is did stand out from the many 4/4 tunes out there. A pure summer groove to chill out to on the beach or to let loose in the clubs to. IM

It's Not Right
X Men Vs Whitney Housten
White

Listen

There has been THAT surge of r&b remixes which don't really cut the mark. Of course there have been the classic r&b remixes and the king of r&b remixes has to be the X-Men and also ex-XMen member Johnny J in his Wookie disguise. This was one of the early r&b remixes and is one of the best in my opinion. This take on the new Whitney sound really does shine with THOSE rolling trademark X-Men beats. That xylophone rift sounds so criss underneath those classic Whitney vocals. The tune really kicks when the beat kicks in with the use of as MJ Cole said "very semi-quavery patterns". The most enjoyable bit of the remix for me is when the vocals build up when the tune is in full swing and then lets out the a gospel style lyric and then the bassline kicks in again. Absolutely essential if your an X-Men fan. IM

 Life Story
Angie Stone (Booker T remix)
White

Listen

Booker T!!! Yes Booker T is back with a new remix from the 'New Maci Gray' Angie Stone in typical Booker T fashion. It has all those elements we associate with him, the things that we've come to love. The skippy, well tight 4/4 drums with those bouncy chords really suit Stone's vocals. It is a typical Booker T remix and well if your a follower of his sound you should be pleased with this one. IM

What's Going On
Wookie
Manchu

Boooooooo. What a tune, what an inspiration from the man they call the Johnny J, who left the X-Men partnership to go on his own to form the Wookie phenomena. This is basically a remake of that Soul II Soul classic, but has turned it into a Latino 2step stormer. The intro chords instantly gives you a warning that there is something different going on here. The Latin arranged chords slide perfectly over the beautiful vocals. The awesome beats from Wookie then kicks in and the Wookie sounding underline, bline then kicks in to a firing effect. Then he progresses with the inclusion of the piano lick and some salsa hi hats and effects which finishes the tune perfectly. A wicked offering from Wookie. IM

Flowers
Sunship vs Chunky featuring MC Shadow Cain
White

Hmmm, this tune has been rinsed out proper, but now has been reincarnated into more of a bassline stomper by the one Chunky featuring a garage/old skool breakbeat MC. It is quite weird to get listen to at first but this should rock the clubs. This dirty Wookie style pulsing bassline with the Flowers style beat starts off with that weird beautiful sample from the Sunship remix but is filtered and sounds different. At first I didn't think much of it but it has grown on me and will satisfy the crowd who still want Flowers but a different style for the night. MC Shadow Cain's lyrics are short but sweet nothing too special. Should be seeing this tune in charts won't we? IM

Lovebug (Original and Lovebug2000)
Ramsey and Fen feat. MC Creed
Bug

Listen

This tune is still PHAT. Now with a new remix in the form Lovebug 2000. Lovebug 2000 features the MC neat and is more of a bassline influxed tune. It's a different take on R&F orignal 2step stormer, and well it does suit the mind of the ravers, a more deeper darker sort of tune. Though the vocals are coming back they though to include an MC and it's from Creed. Personally I think the original by R&F is the best though this tune will and think that this tune is alright with Creed's lyrics and his vocal effects, "We didadada do it again". Though the original was a tune that combinded the early 2step beats to those jazzy 4/4 chord, with a jazzy style vocalist to sing those smooth lyrics. The chopped up vocals, breaky 2step beats and those vocals was an instant club success with the ravers. A true piece of vocal 2step with that d&b style breakdown shows the 1st class production skills. Also the engineer was the one and only MJ Cole, which really shows off his skills. IM

Crazy Love
Full FX Crew
White

Another Crazy Love you ask?? Yes but it's different to MJ Cole's one and is just pure coincidence. The bit that strikes most about this tune is the wicked old skool breakbeat style piano rift. This gives the tune that raw feeling old skool feeling, but has superb vocals and chrisp beats all rolled into one. Then to add to this tune is the constant seamless switch from 2step into 4/4 with the addition of a chord change and then instantly switched to 2step again, with that wicked piano lick. It is always constantly changing, but really sounds rough when the 4/4 kicks drums rolls over the 2step hi hats and snares with MJ Cole style squelches and that rough old skool piano rift, smooth subtle 4/4 chords and of course the smooth, phat and funky vocals. Phewwww, a tune and a half. Defiantly in the front of MY BOX!!! IM

Imagine
Shola Ama vs Club Asylum
White

Wow, another hit from the Club Asylum boys. That KC and JoJo tune really did show people to remix r&b tunes, well them and the X-Men. This tune has the same production as in Tell Me That It's Real remix, but is very funky and has some interesting instruments used in it. The guitar licks, the strings and of course the lovely Shola's vocals on top. Shola has had some good garage makeovers from 10degrees below to the one and only MJ Cole. Though this tune has to one of the best, the chrisp breaky 2step drums the smooth but deep bassline shows off the house influences that this boys have but the roughness from the 2step scene. A tune that really brings summer a few months early. IM

Flowers
Sunship
White

Listen

Oh lord, I heard this tune so long ago I almost forgotten it. This tune breaths a new life into garage, moving away from the bassline/d&b styles and moving back to the days of 2step when you heard a good vocal and a good production behind it. The chord progression is standard in most song written songs and Sunship has gone for that approach with maximum effect. The lyrics are feel good and will do just that, very catchy. Sunship is a producer that is breathing new life into the scene and with tunes like this, Try Me Out and many more (check the album) this producer has to be in top producers with MJ Cole, Steve Gurley and Bump & Flex. IM

Jacking Beats
Bootleg
White

Feature the Old Skool piano lick from Sweet Harmony by Liquid over the vocals from an old 2step tune. A wired culmination but a descent tune has come out from it. It's a real crowd pleaser mixing two different styles together to form this cheeky bootleg. Not to bad in bootleg terms, though should please the old skool heads and 2step heads alike. IM

Soulsearcher
Artful dodger
White

The intro has rolling tribal drums that get filtered to the effect of background drums while the crisp 2step beats become predominate. The breakdown occurs and you're left with smooth beats and beautiful production. Beautiful vocals from Soulsearcher's lead vocalist Thea Austin singing wonderful lyrics over rolling beats and the usual use chromatic instrumentation by the Artful's. Wonderful piece of 2step with noticeable tribal drums which get filtered in ever so often. Another hit by the Dodgers IM

Tonight Rmx
Todd Edwards
White

What A tune. The man who always please the crowd. The man from New Jersey can produce and has been a key figure in the 4/4 scene, (read the article on Todd Edwards). This tune has an amazing electronic bassline under the Latin rhythms. The amazing loop effects before a chorus is amazing. This tune has something always going on. It has so much energy which should get any raver going. The male vocals have the typical Todd Choppyness under the actual smooth full vocals. Production is first class as usual. With rough disco rifts and strings and piano samples. If you know your garage, 4/4 then you will love this tune. If only more pirates played more of Todd's stuff. So many people are missing out. Definatly in my box. IM

Taking Over Me
New design
White

IM

Let Me Show U
James Lavonz feat Darkside
Locked On

This tune is reaffirming my idea that 4/4 is coming back into the UK Garage scene again. The 2step mix is rather phat with a rolling bassline under some rolling vocals. Though flip over on the other side and listen to the 4/4 mix, with the 4/4 beats we know and love reminding us of the good times. A good production from James and is a tune to be heard. This bloke produces some good stuff so watch out for him.

IM

Sill On My Side
Bb Mak
White

Listen

I was shocked to find out that this is a band, and a BOY BAND to that. It occurred to me that I had to listen to the original and though the original is not you ordinary Boyzone I still think the Dodger's are miracle workers. What a remake, with the wailing vocal samples in the background and the xylophone rift over the nice relaxed beats, a quality they have used often in a lot of their productions gives this tune character. Tunes like this shows how rough the vocal spectrum of UK Garage can be done. A weird band to pick but they have come out triumphant. IM

Apparently Nothing
Brand New Heavies
White

The Brand New Heavies are a rough commercial Acid Jazz band who has brought us many tunes great tunes. The cover on the New Disciples (the lead singer of the band is now the lead singer of the Brand New Heavies) has been given the Artful treatment to maximum effect. The guitar rift is absolutely rowdy. There approach on the garage scene is keeping the scene nice and fresh and with this remix shows the how good the scene can get. The vocals slip over their rift that they've made showing their classical training that they use to a maximum effect. Whata tune!!! IM

Woman Trouble
Artful Dodger
Public Demand

Listen

This has to be my favourite Dodger's tune so far. The production and vocals of this tune are absolutely 1st class. Craig David and Robbie Craig sing about their Woman Trouble's while the Artful's brings us a beautiful piece of backing. Their hook in this tune is the bassline/keyboard bit which I feel is so emotive and gives this tune the scope to achieve it's heartfelt emotion. The lyrics and the vocals are equally amazing and completes the tune. It's a wonderful tune and one of my favourite 2step tunes, it's THAT GOOD. IM

Girls Like Us
Crissy D & Lady G vs B15 Project
Oracabessa

Listen

This tune is the flip side to Lady Saw's 'Freak Beat' reviewed elsewhere. Again the remix has been carried out by Birmingham's B15 Project. Another catchy 'Ragga style' slice of 2 Step, with the combination of Crissy D's Sweet soulful voice and Lady G's original ragga style. Overall this is a very good tune, with quality production and a catchy hook. The blend of vocals and ragga chat offers unique sound. This one will be big! JH

Movin' Too Fast
Artful Dodger
Locked On

Listen

This tune which is out on re-release with brand-new mixes from Grant-Bump & Flex-Nelson. The original is my favourite, featuring house vocalist Romina Johnson. The vocals and productions again are first class and is a nice piece of mellow 2step. The beats have a continuously rolling snare that gives the tune a wicked effect. The chromatic instrument used in the tune comes out so well and gives the tune that wonderful feeling. The Bump and Flex vocal mix is pretty much the same as the Arftul's mix and is just pitching up the tempo and changing the beat, though maintains the soulfulness of the original. The Dub is funkier than Grant's usual dark dubs. The bline is funky and the beats are rolling with the vocal stabs of 'Movin Too Fast'. A nice approach from Grant and one to get now it's getting it's well deserved re-release. IM

Walk On By
Gabrielle vs Unknown
White

It's been around 5/6 months since the rough remix of 'Walk On By' by the man Steve Gurley, but has now been resurrected by a new mix. It's in the vein of Steve Gurley's remix but is has more of the vocals and more instruments going on. Gurley is the master of sparse 2step and this remix takes his ideas but adds extra instruments and tough beats and a bassline of sort. It's a nice remix of a beautiful tune covered by the vocalist Gabrielle.

IM

Street Life
Daryl B
White

What a tune!! A nice surprise to see such a piece of soulful and funky 2step. The production of this is 1st class especially with the instruments used and its nice chord structures and rhythms developed as it progress's. The vocals are ruff with its funky, happy tone with a tint of Gospel Diva to add. An excellent piece of fresh 2step with an apparent inspiration of US Garage thrown in. In the box, most definitely. IM

Music Sounds Better (2 step Bootleg mix)
Stardust
White

Listen

A new but late remix of that classic funky house tune. This 2step remix is more in the vein of the bline kru. It is quite funky with the choppy keyboard action, choppy 2step beats and of course the hard but quite funky bassline. The Stardust vocals are chopped over the actual tune and used to effect. The intro consists of claps and the vocals to tell the raver that something is going to happen, but doesn't know what's going to happen. A good piece of bassline garage that brings a bit of funk into the bassline garage scene. IM

Joy and Pain
Dangerous Minds
White

A new piece of 2step from this new garage outfit featuring MC 'I Like It' Kie on the mic and production from DJ Lewie/Rob Wallis. MC Kie doesn't ride the Mic like Fly Bi but just say's a few catchy lyrics. What takes centre stage on this tune is the female vocalist with the catchy lyrics over the good, tight production and of a good bassline. Not as obvious as Fly Bi in MC-ing terms but a ruff cut which should keep everybody happy. Watch out for these guys because they will be bringing us some tunes in the future. IM

I Will Survive
Silver Quest
White

A new cover on that 70's disco classic by Gloria Gayner. This tune has been given the 2step treatment to quite a basslick effect. It's a good attempt on the tune, the main focus on the tune is the deep and dark bassline, which has that wah wah effect to it. The vocals are re-sung with a good vocalist, nothing in the diva region but a good vocalist. The backing is repetitive though and doesn't really change or develop too much. Though the vocals slide on top of the rhythm and do fit quite well. A tune to get the crowd hyper though, with the familiar lyrics and 'Da bad bassline, bad bassline'. IM

Negrocan
Cada Vez (Grant Nelson Remixes)
Swing City Records

The original is a piece of Latin beats was popular among the Latin oriented clubs. The Grant Nelson mixes as played by 'Little Louie Vega' the legionary producer/DJ are the ones doing it for the house headz. The vocal mix has the Grant Nelson 4/4 production. Tough and tight beats with good Latino style hi-hats. The vocals sit perfectly over his nice keyboard rhythms. The vocals are in Spanish giving it that distinctive flavour which is absolutely sublime. Grant's beat mix is just beautifully programmed beats that are begging to be sampled. The dub mix is has got the vocals though in typical dub style. The keyboard and strings has that 4/4 garage feel something obviously close to Grants heart. For those who want the original then that's included as well. IM

Get Get Down
A & J
White

Listen

This garage 'remake' of that Ibiza smash by Paul Johnson. It's is in the same vein of the original but has a added xylophone bassline which is often used in garage. It doesn't really do much to the original and the only many difference is the 2step beat. The actual 'Down, down' sample still contains the original hit-hats from Paul's original and you can here them with the vocals. Production is therefore a bit scrappy and bland, not really a tune I'll have in my box. IM

Let Me Be Your Fantasy
Baby D vs Jason Kaye
White

Listen

Let Me Be Your Fantasy was a commercial rave anthem back in the day but has now tried to come back in 2step form by Jason Kaye, but I'm sorry to say he has failed miserably. The production on this tune is rather odd, with what he tries to do with the vocals is the most worrying part. He tries to chop up the vocals but fails it sounds rather unfinished and is on the verge of building up but is a total anti-climax. It's too repetitive and boring and it doesn't seem to take the audience anywhere. The worst part of all is the second break down which sound's like the record is stuck, it sounds terrible. Compare it to the original and I think you would agree. IM

I Gave You My Lovin'
TJ Cases
Cut'n'Play

TJ Cases an underrated producer but he does produce a lot of good vocal 2 step tunes out there. This tune has a feel of Do It Again a previous anthem by himself. The beats are rough, a mixture a breakbeat/r&b feel to it at a garage tempo, amazing. The vocals are quite sublime though nothing out of the ordinary. The chord structure is nicely laid out to give the tune a nice warm feel to it. This tune is nothing special but still should keep the vocal crowd happy. IM

Teardrops
Lovestation vs Ramsey and Fenn

White     The classic by Womack and Womack has been given the 2step treatment. Previous 2step bootlegs were rather bland but this attempt is quite good, but the problem is that the vocals on this tune don't suit the production of Ramsey & Fenn. Their production techniques are very good but the actual tune behind the vocals seems off key and therefore giving that feel to it. It's a nice piece of vocal 2step but not really up to scratch. I personally think the Flava Mix, which was released a few years back is the best mix. It's a breakbeat mix that has the funkiest melody to it, which gives this tune a certain flava to it. Also some house remixes out there which again do not seem to suit the vocals, so I'll recommend the Flava mix. IM

I See/Give me back Your Love
MJ Cole
Talkin loud 7" promo

Listen

This tune is now hard to find but is worth to have go tracking it down. I See is a mellow, Massive Attack style tune, with dreamy seductive vocalist Elizabeth Troy supplying us with the lyrics. Its a down tempo tune and isn't UK Garage. On the B-side is Give me back my love. This is a funky piece of 2 step featuring Cello & Izzy on vocals. It's a nice slammin' tune with great vocals and has live instrumentation included. Production is up to scratch though the only problem is it's only 3.21 minutes long! A tune which is going to bring garage into the new millennium. Slamin' though not to everyone's taste, though if you love MJ Cole you would love this tune. Watch out for review on Attitude and his forthcoming album early in the new year. IM

Public Demand Vocal Sessions Volume 1 & Volume 2
Volume 1 M&S-Special (Ramsey & Fenn rmx's)
Volume 2 Underground Solutions-Sensitivity
Public Demand

Public demand is one of UK garage's top labels, always one to churn out quality garage that is adorned by the garage headz. These releases are quite old but haven't been getting the radio play they deserve, shows how bassline garage dominates the circuit.
Volume 1- features two remixes by garage dons Ramsey and Fenn. The 2-step mix, is my fave mix, with the 4/4 mix being quite good, 4/4 heads should love it. This as public demand express is a nice vocal tune. The intro is rather sparse with a solemn build up which brings a rough piece of garage. The bassline is truly funky, well filtered and though of. The vocals sit perfectly on top of the tune, a good tune but does get a repetitive towards the end. Still though is a nice tune, which should get canned. Volume 2-The main 2 step mix is my favourite, the other 2-step mix is rather nice with the Sensuality vocals part being used to a Poison style effect. Quite good though. The main mix is a nice slice of vocal garage. The bassline in this tune is a another funky bassline, with the cutting effect on the bassline giving this tune major character. It's a nice mix with the male vocals really siting on top. The beat is well programmed and fits perfectly under the vocals and bassline. These tunes are so underplayed it's unbelievable. A nice selection of garage for the real garage heads who like their vocals, I can't see you going wrong with these tunes. IM

Right Before My Eyes
N&G feat Kallaghan and MC Neat
Urban Heat     Listen

An absolute anthem first time around and now given a new lease of life with a new remix featuring MC Neat the best MC on the circuit. Grant gives us a 4/4 mix which is more US Garage inclined. MC's Neat version is quite good in fact, a feel good tune. The production is typical N&G, ie good standard. The string intro is really nice giving us a hint of what the tune is. Neat's lyrics are feel good, mainly to suit the ladies kru out there. The tune then breaks off into a good 2 step beat, another breakdown and the organ bassline kicks in. The bassline suits the vocals and really is a feel good tune, different recommendation, original is in there. IM

U Can't Stop Me
Basement Jaxx
White

A tune which is underplayed, maybe due to a few copies out there. Basement Jaxx are one of the most versatile producers out there. They are more inclined in there house roots, but they still know what's going on around them. This attempt at producing a 2 step tune is a really good attempt. Originally an R&B track on their album is in the vein of Bump & Flex. The bassline has that Doollaly (Bump & Flex Dub mix) to it. Its well produced and has the interesting effects and rawness that the Jaxx are known for. A inclusion of a piano melody adds to the tune and makes it different from many other 2 step tunes out there. Unaccredited Stephen Emmanuelle remix which is alright a typical mix with variation to the Jaxx's mix. IM

Rise
Gabrielle vs Artful Dodger
Go Beat

Gabrielle gets some good makeovers. There was Steve Gurley-Walk On By (A cover by Gabrielle), Sunshine, Wookie mixes and now Rise. Rise has been given the Artful Dodger treatment. Artful Dodger have made good tunes in there time, though rewind isn't one of those tunes on my list, they have made Woman Trouble, Movin' Too Fast, remixes of BbMak, Lynden David Hall, Brand New Heavies. This is rather mellow tune, quite nice at the end of night sort of tune. Production is 1st class, something we've come to expect of them. Her vocals do go with the melody they've created for her and it's nice piece of 2 step. The dub is quite similar to the vocal mix so don't expect any pirate's chatting over this one. An all right attempt from them a nice mellow tune, though not exactly one of their best but a nice tune. IM

Crazy Love/Attitude
MJ Cole featuring Elizabeth Troy (MJ Cole and Todd Edwards Mixes)

White     MJ Cole comes up with a vocal driven piece of 2step on the original mix with the beautiful vocalist Elizabeth Troy. With a well thought of subtle bassline to the rolling trademark beats and those "snares" he uses. The harp style chords and instruments mixed in with the obscure SFX's he finds to put into his tunes. This of course is first class production as usual. That is to be said that even though I might not like a particular tune of his I still will admire the production qualities. The dub mixes are MADD with mind blowing basslines and chopped up vocals all that are shown in those breakdowns. The harp/piano mellow breakdown contrasts with the deep and dark rolling beats and bassline. Absolute MJ Cole darkness.

Attitude is more of MJ Cole showing off his dark side. Going back to his drum and bass roots but in a garage style. Troy's vocals are ver haunting and beautiful which is a style used in MJ Cole's dub, a lot of irony, and can be seen as the Shakespeare of garage, haha, ANYWAY. It's a very sudden tune with a breakdown just goes into you with this heavy rumbling bassline and sweet echoing/looped vocals. Another wicked tune.

Todd Edwards remixes, well what the hell can I say???? TODD THE GOD!!! Remixing the man MJ Cole. Two dons on one record. Personally I think the vocal mix by Todd is astounding and I think it's ONE of his best remixes to date. The classic snare/high hats are there in full effect and the astounding way he chops up a vocal to make it sound like part of the drum is too much. The way he builds the vocals which builds to this amazing chorus which is mellow on top but underneath is totally pumping. Todd knows how to work a crowd in his tunes, the way he builds up the audience is astounding and then he has a major breakdown to calm down the audience is really astounding and impressive. His vision is astounding and this remix should be rinsed on the pirates alongside MJ Cole's remixes. IM

Label: Polydor
Mix: Todd Edwards Mixes / M&M

The Todd Edwards remix of Mr Bedingfield's second release has already been rinsed by EZ for months, having hit the tops of nearly all the garage charts "James Dean" is on every dj's shopping list. Remixed in the way only Todd knows, the vocal floats over the chunky 4/4 beats and puzzled melody while the rolling bassline finely stiches everything together. This double vinyl pack also includes nice M&M mixes while the commercial release is set to feature Izzie B and 2Man Gang Mixes. James Dean (I Wanna Know) is released 12/08/02. DJ DBT

Label: Red Rose
Mix: Double Pack (Original, DBX Dub, Zoom & DBX, Osmosis, Del)

Hailed by EZ as "An all time classic rave tune" What Have You Done is on the re-release a decade after it originally took clubland by Storm. This is a great record with a remix to suit everyone's needs. My favourite has got to be the original but all the others are superb (This double pack even includes a Progressive House mix by Del). If you don't recognize the title you will definitely recognize the intro, unmistakable - What Have You Done can also be heard on the last installment of the Pure Garage series where EZ mixes it into Believe (DJ Faz). Working with the same formula that continues to give 'Something In Your Eyes' regular airplay the duo have provided us with another classic sure to crossover to the mainstream. With sounds and beats similar to that of the previous hit, K-Warrens A class production accompanies the instantly recognisable vocal of Shelly wonderfully. Sure to be a sing-a-long favourite and summer time anthem, 'Find A Way' is available now!! DJ DBT

Artist: 2MG
Title: EZ When U Want 2
Label: DND Promo
Mix: DND Vocal / DND Dub

This is a great summer time vocal track, with catchy lyrics and great production this is sure to be a favourite at home and abroad. Although the DND vocal mix is good, personally I cant get enough of the flip side. Here you'll find a stomping 4/4 Todd Edwards style Dub mix. The fantastic distorted vocal and rolling basslines are already causing a stir on dance floors everywhere. This is one of my favourite tracks this summer and has assured it's position at the front of my record box!! DJ DBT

Artist: Blunts
Title: Blunts Vol 1
Label: White
Mix: Original

Originally pressed last year, this repress for 2002 features a remix of Original Pirate Material (The Streets) on one side and a MC Neat Mash-Up on the other. Both mixes include a few old skool house samples along with some great Instruments, Something that many UK Garage records have been lacking lately. This is a very limited run so you'll be lucky to find it in your local record store. As far as I know you will not find this track anywhere north of London. Email me for further info! DJ DBT

Artist: J-Sweet & DJ Cameo
Title: Hi-Grade
Label: Sweet Beatz
Mix: 4/4 Mix

Great bassline track from J-Sweet and Cameo of the london record store 'Uptown Records'. With a bassline similar to that of 'Triplets' and a great combination of cymbals and 4/4 beats this one has found its way to the front of most DJ's record boxes!! DJ DBT

Artist: Christina Milian
Title: When You Look At Me
Label: Island
Mix: Agent X

Great follow up to the top 5 hit AM to PM. Agent X has taken this already great tune, placed that distinctive trademark drum beat behind the fantastic vocal and created their best remix to date. The remix features MC Romeo but if thats not your thing there is a version without the So Soild star and an instrumental to boot. If you havent bought this, WHY??? DJ DBT

Artist: Troublesome
Title: Bubblegum
Label: Red Rose
Mix: Original/Oracles

Everyone knows the distinctive Ragga sound of Troublesome, they had great success with their first release, which now years after its release still a favourite. Bubblegum comes on a great picture disc, but unfortunately this is probably the best thing about it. Its not that this is a bad record, it's just that it isn't strong enough to match their previous success. Yes it has some great vocals and the melody is OK but it doesn't seem to go anywhere. Not catchy enough to be a sing-along favourite but still a mediocre record. DJ DBT

Artist: Lorraine Cato
Title: Did It
Label: Social Circles
Mix: Original

"Did it" in simple terms is a vocal version of "Operatic" which was released last summer. Sticky has reworked the bass and beats to compliment the new vocal, which in my opinion has improved this tune to no end. This catchy dance floor filler could easily follow in the footsteps of 'Tales of the hood' into a full release. Man of the moment Sticky does it again!! DJ DBT

Artist: DJ Wire
Title: Believe Me
Label: White
Mix: Original

If you see this in a record shop, grab it and run, don't look back until you are safely behind your decks. This record is on every DJ's wanted list and is guaranteed to send a crowd insane when dropped mid-set. 'Believe Me' is every neighbours nightmare and every DJ's dream. Once you get hold of this record you will want to play it so loud and so many times that your ears will bleed. Certain to be one of this summers biggest bassline tracks 'Believe Me' should be in every DJ's record box. DJ DBT

Artist: Resevoir Dogs
Title: Earth
Label: Resevoir Dogs
Mix: Original

This is not a new tune, but seems to be popping up in most record shops once more. This 702 remix has definitely gained 'Classic' status and should never be removed from your record box. The great opening rift is sure to get everyone rushing to the dance floor, but you can forget about hearing the rest of the tune, because as soon as the vocal cuts in, the sorrowful whine of Mariah Carey wannabe's will steal the sweet voices of 702 away from your ears. A Superb Record!! DJ DBT

Artist: Wookie
Title: Far East
Label: Manchu
Mix: Original

As soon as you see the name Wookie, you know you are getting a top quality tune. Undoubtedly one of the best producers in the garage scene Wookie constantly produces amazing material. Far East has the distinctive Wookie beats and basslines we have all grown to love with a slightly oriental feel to the record. Definitely one of the best tunes out there at the moment and almost certain to reach the top of any garage chart. Also watch out for Wookies remix of Liberty X 'Wanting Me Tonight' DJ DBT

Artist: The Reelists
Title: Freak Mode
Label: Go Beat
Mix: Sunship Remix

In my opinion this is the best of the Freak Mode remixes, the unmistakable sound of Sunship has turned this R&B favourite into a dance floor filler. With a throbbing bassline intro and a series of beass building breaks, Sunship has created an instant sing-a-long anthem. Remixed in a way only Sunship knows how, Freak Mode is undoubtedly an asset to any record collection. DJ DBT

Artist: Stush
Title: Dollar Sign
Label: Social Circles
Mix: Original

Female MC Lady Stush lays down a great Jamaican influenced vocal over the Sticky's trademark sub-bass. This one sided 12" test press is in all the Top DJ's record boxes and is being played absolutely everywhere. This High Energy, Heavy track is sure to get this Up & Coming MC noticed. DJ DBT

Right Before My Eyes
N&G featuring Kallaghan
Urban Heat
1998

Listen

When this tune first surfaced on the 2step market it absolutely blew up the place. The production is at the helms of Noris Windross and Grant 'Bump & Flex' Nelson. Two minds put together to form a remake of the early piano house classic by Patti Day-Right Before My Eyes on Fuse.

This tune features Kallaghan, an amazing vocalist who can really sing. There are many mixes out there including the new remix featuring MC Neat and older 4/4 and commercial house mixes. Though all the attention should be focused on the original 2step mix.

The production on this tune is quite subtle by the way the things are used to achieve a mad vocal/bassline flex. The beats have a breakbeat feel to it, Grant produced a few breakbeat/hardcore tunes in his time, which really adds to the tune. The vocals slide into the beats and bassline to a rip roaring effect, when the first breakdown occurs the ravers know something is going to happen. They fail to disappoint and with the amazing beats, bassline and vocals all surge into one and this classic is born. With some variation on the bassline the tune maintains and captivates the audience.

Grant is an amazing producer has produced hardcore to house to 2step. Norris has produced a few tunes but they've been excellent i.e. Heartbeat featuring Rose Windross under the Pseudo guise. So respect to these two guys and Kallaghan and remember that they created a classic and even won an award for it, back in 1998 they won tune of the year award in the Underground Garage Awards, well deserved. Spirit of The Sun (Remixes)
Lenny Fontana
Public Demand
1998

Listen

Lenny Fontana is well respected US Garage/House producer bringing us Thinkin About Your Love, Chocolate Sensation and under Powerhouse guise with Duane Harden-What You Need. Though when the UK Garage scene came along the UK garage ravers gave him respect by the storming 2step mixes.

There are many mixes out there, James Lavonz remix, and Bump and Flex mixes which are equally amazing. Though it's the Steve Gurley Mixes which stand out. When Steve (ex-d&b producer) thought of remixing this tune he used his d&b production techniques to come up with a bass driven stormer. This is one of the 2step tunes which answered the question of all the ravers out there. There was a divide out there and the ravers wanted a cross between r&b and drum and bass, the production and darkness of d&b with the mixture of the soul/vocal's brought to us by r&b. This tune certainly answered this question. With it's sparse intro, a technique Gurley is known for, and the horns for the intro it really tells you that something is going to happen. Once the breakdown happens and the vocalist lets rip the lyrics 'Shine On Shine On SHINE ON' a mad bassline comes out of nowhere and really makes you want to get up and dance. It's got such a raw vibe to it, the dark dirty bassline, the wailing vocals, the strings and wisps all culminate together to form this piece great piece of 2 step. Also Gurley's beats are so well programmed and memorable which has a distinctive clink to it which has been featured in so many of his UK Garage mixes that we can recognise a Gurley beat or production instantly. Masquerade
Gerideau vs MJ Cole
Inferno
1998

Listen

This tune is one of my favourite MJ Cole remixes. Matt-MJ Cole-Coleman is a producer with such skill and talents you know when he makes a tune either good or bad the production qualities are certainly up to scratch. His musical credentials aren't that of your average dance music producer i.e. Classically trained in piano and oboe, so when you here a tune you can here the classical elements within his tunes.

MJ has produced some classic 2step tunes such as the UK smash 'Sincere', 'Sanctuary' and many remixes has brought a new fresh approach to UK Garage. The MJ Cole 'Vocal' mix is the main mix with it's careful wisping string intro and the subtle piano notes tell you that this tune is different, and is more soulful then your ordinary 2step tune. The amazing well programmed beats alternate from 2step to 4/4 so seamlessly which incorporates the mood changes within the piece. Gerideau's vocals are incredible and shine through MJ's backing.

The chopped up vocals and the synth style trumpet support the main, well sung vocals. A tune that really puts the funk back into garage. A true innovator in his own right and is given the rightly deserved respect by all the leading UK Garage DJ's. IM

Fun
Da Mob featuring Jocelyn Brown
Subliminal/Incredible
1998

An excellent offering from the well respect, and consistent label Subliminal. With a lot of remixes to offer i.e. Basement Jaxx, DJ Sneak, Booker T, but it's the Todd Edwards remix which is the one that stands out for the garage heads.

The New Jersey producer is well respected with his 'cut & paste' technique which he has mastered. Bringing us so many tunes i.e. Never Far from U, Saved My Life, Alabama etc. He has had such an influence on the UK Garage scene with his production techniques.

This remix of Fun has shown some of his skills, with his rolling 4/4 beats with the choppy snare gives us the indication that Todd's on production. With the amazing vocals of the diva Jocelyn Brown and Todd's rhythm, it is a truly amazing tune.

The rift of the tune has that disco influence in it which is plays a main part in his tunes. It adds class and brings back that happy feeling. The build up of the tune is rather clever giving the impression that after every break down the tune seems to be speeding up until the last breakdown which totally slows down the tune again. A great trait to such a great remix.

Todd has so much influence in the scene and even EZ has got Todd Edward style cut and paste production with his tunes, though EZ doesn't really release a lot of what he makes and only keeps it on dub plate/acetate to play out himself. IM
